Jamie's Dps Analysis Research

The font used on the front page of the magazine isn’t the same as in the main article/double page spread. There are at least 4 different font’s used in this article; the front cover, the opening to the article, the questions in the article and the answer’s. There are repeating colours of orange, green and blue. These relate to the bands new albums coming out, and each band member is holding an album. There are three different pictures of the band, and in each of them a different member of the band is holding a different album. This is another way to promote the album and is another medium of selling it.

The tenor of the article is a relaxed one, like old friends catching up almost and the register is consultative. We can tell this because of the linguistic signs used like the questions being in different colours to tell them apart from the main text. The fact how each individual band member has their own opinion shows it’s not rehearsed. The medium is a conversation, which is pretty obvious.  The domain of the article is the band, Green Day, and their background and past. There is a pulled quote, but it’s pulled out of context.

The band, in their pictures are dressed in black with other colours mixed in, like red and black striped t-shirts and bowler hats. They’re pulling weird facial expressions to enforce the visual impression they’re punks and are rebelling. This time, against being smiley and happy in photo’s.

What I can use from this; is how to structure my double page spread, what sort of photo’s I can use, what the subject of my photo’s should be, and how many different font’s and font sizes are needed, and how I should get my models to pose and dress. I also have a better understanding of what the writing style of my article should be, which is a relaxed, consultative one.

Alex's Dps Analysis Research

The visual signs on this dps are mostly pictures lots of pictures, 7 in total alot more then any usual dps normally has. All of the photos have got the big name musicians in and that all of them are smiling and laughing, the writer has chosen these photos because the whole event was to raise money and awareness of pancreatic cancer, the photos then help show how well the concert went and how much fun everyone had, making the reader want to go to the next one and help fight pancreatic cancer.

All of the pictures are of rock legends Led zep, iron maiden , deep purple, queen and alice cooper were all at one concert so to most readers all of these people are iconic to them making the photos iconic. The only symbolic sign would be seeing all of the musicians would have the effect on the reader that he/she is seeing absolute classic legends for most people at some point will of listened to these people, however there are no indexical signs present or polysemous.

The tenor of the dps and the register of it is very formal and serious as this sunflower jam was to raise money and awareness for pancreatic cancer making the register of this dps a mix between consultative and formal because it is a serious article but has jokey bits to lighten it up a bit. The domain of the article does affect the tenor because cancer is a very sensitive subject as alot of people will experience some form of encouter with cancer in there life.

Alex and Jamie's Analysis Research

The visual signs on the dps (double page spread)  are to do with the pull quote on the picture which says "id love to learn more jazz, thats an element of my style thats definitely missing" which shows why its not in colour but the visual signs are what makes the photo show you how they are a band, little things like the tattoos on the bassisists shoulder, the facial expressions, the instrutments the hair and all the sweat and concentration of the musicians faces. Also the linguistic signs show you its a band not just two people pretending to play instrutments.

The photo is a iconic sign because when people see other people playing instrutments they think muscicians. They also would think of songs and previous artists that the individual thinking this would like. The dps doesnt have any polysemous signs in the dps, but the tenor is formal and serious in the intro to the dps proof of this is when the writer puts " The album was a finely crafted master piece, showcasing the bands ability to pen anthemic tunes"  Something like this has technical language and people who are involved in the music industry would understand this, some of the younger audience may not this shows this article is aimed at elder readers. But then the tenor sounds like there friends when there talking in the interview making the interview have a casual register ,where as the rest of the dps have a consultative register because it is very formal and the text has statstics and technical language.

The individual images in the picture on the left of our double page spread all have their own meaning. For example, the tattoo might hold a form of love for the guitarist whose tattoo it is. It might be the name of a past or present lover to him.  The wild hair style the guitarist has going on could relate to him either being a wild person with a wild attitude. The instruments obviously tell us they're musicians. Now, these individual signs tells us these things, and when we add them together we get all these meanings put together in one person or band. So, what we learn, is that the guys in this band are a bit wild, they love their music and love making music. In this photo, the men are topless which would be to attract female members, as it would widen the appeal of the photo to both genders. The pulled quote on the picture “i'd love to learn to jazz that's an element of my style that's missing” relates the them playing in the picture, which could be him trying to pick up some jazz techniques.

The tenor of the article changes at different points. The introduction to the article is quite formal as it is an introduction and is supposed to tell the reader what the article contains and should be clear to the reader.

Once the article begins, the tenor immediately changes to a more relaxed feel. The main indicator of this, is the fact the drummer starts swearing after the second question. This shows that the interview isn't formal, because some people would be offended by the swearing. The swearing tells me that the audience is at least 16, and that they are laid back and don't care that he swears. Another is the anecdotes in the article because you can't get much more personal than an anecdote. The anecdote is about his family meeting meeting some of his heroes and both the family and the heroes of his get along really well. You can tell by the way he tell us this, it means a lot to him. The questions are of a much more personal nature as well, asking him feelings over bands, events, upcoming gigs, his heroes and what inspired him when he was younger and training to be a great drummer.

The font used in this spread is a simple one, and there is only about 2 fonts used. One for the titles, and one for the text. The questions the drummer is asked are in red and the replies are in black. The colour scheme for the page, is black, white and red.

Jamie's Similar Product Research

This magazine has no rule of thirds, as there is no actual text or pictures on the right, it’s all been centered. This appears to be the magazines house style, or at least one aspect of it. They don’t appear to use many pugs or puffs on the cover. They stick to having band photos with plain backgrounds, like one tone of grey, black or white. This issue must be a special one, as it doesn’t conform to that aspect of the house style. The main colours that they use are red, yellow and white; they sometimes switch out for a black, grey and white however. The magazine must be well established, given that they’re picture is in front of their masthead. They’ve used one banner at the base and nothing else really. This makes the magazine seem simple enough, but this could also make them seem simple and slightly amateur. In the picture they’ve gotten one person to stand in the foreground and the rest are in the background. The cloaked person is Marilyn Manson, because the anchorage text is touching him and the band in the background are Slayer, given the anchorage text is touching them. The cloaked figure is clearly the most important person on the cover, given that they are in the foreground, and the fact they are the tallest. The rest of the people are in the background and are all different heights, based on their importance in their band from a magazine/media point of view. The font’s they’ve used work well with the theme of rock and roll/metal music.  In this photo men are being represented as bikers, tough guys with tattoo’s who act like rebels. This conforms to the stereotype of men being tough guys but some of them aren’t, but this is what the music business is about, not having to be a tough guy to succeed and be famous.

This magazine follows the centering theme, given that they have no rule of thirds. The only magazine I’ve seen that does this is Kerrang magazine. This magazine has gone for a colour scheme of grey, black and white, but this could tie into the fact of it being a 10th anniversary issue for AC/DC, so they went for colours that show this as being back before the days of colour printing, and it being in the past. They typically stick to these colours, but add in the colour red from time to time, like they’ve done here.  The picture is a band picture and has the band together, with them all at different heights, and at different points in the foreground. They’re all though, at similar heights and at similar points in the foreground, which shows they’re all equally important in the band. The anchorage text is touching the band, letting us know that they are AC/DC. The font they’ve used is a classy sort of font, but one that isn’t particularly over-used. In the photo, the band look kind of “punk-ish”. This magazine gives away free stuff on a regular basis, which is a good way to get people to buy the magazine, because people love free stuff.

Alex's Similar Product Research

This magazine front cover doesn’t have a lot of features but it does have a masthead a huge picture and a lead but this is convention to this particular magazine as this is its house style though for the colour scheme, it changes depending on the picture apart from the masthead. There is a representation on this cover but it is done differently as there are hammers on the cover which is related to men because of handy men and builders this is not thought of with women because stereotypically women can only cook.  The cover is mostly to do with the band that’s at the bottom as there album has a song called another brick in the wall which is why there is hammers breaking down a wall, also the triangle with the spectrum of light was one of their album covers from a previous album and basically all of their album covers from 30 years back are on this cover showing all of the bands achievements on one magazine cover. The conventions of all magazines at the very least always have a masthead a picture and some pugs, whereas this magazine codes are freebies and is on most of classic rocks magazine.

This magazine front cover has quite a lot of features it has a masthead, pugs, rule of thirds, anchorage text and freebies. This magazines house style always has a picture of an artist or of the lead man or woman in a band on the front, also it has the same layout each time on the magazine unless the picture interrupts the layout then the layout will just change sides. Most of the text to do with the magazine is on the left and if a picture interrupts or over laps the text will go on the right. Also the magazines colour scheme is white blue and yellow the magazine will always use these colours but depending on the photo in the middle they might change the colours around so if the photo had a blue background they would change the title to white. The magazine has a photo of the lead man in the band 30 seconds to mars in the media industry such as film representations of men are meant to be big, strong and charismatic but in the music industry this doesn’t matter if the artist is talented then that’s all that matters in the photo the man doesn’t look big and strong he just looks like a normal charismatic guy. The conventions of all magazines at the very least always have a masthead a picture and some pugs, whereas this magazine codes are freebies, lots of posters and a lot of pugs and plugs.
