Alex's Selection and Rejection Of Photos

Rejection 1

The first photo I am rejecting was meant to be for my front cover but for this photo is to dark and slightly blurred. Another thing is that there is hardly anything in the background this photo was the decider that I needed to push a lot more props into the photo. Also its just not a great photo and I personally just don’t like the photo very much.

Rejection 2

This photo is another photo, which was going to be for my front cover I changed the actor, the type of shot and the background a little. But the photo is blurred ever so slightly so when it’s zoomed or stretched a little bit it is pixelated and cannot be used for the magazine.

Rejection 3

I rejected this photo because the photo is very dark, flash wasn’t on for this photo because the previous one we took the guitar in the middle reflected the flash, so we tried it without and it turned out to dark.

Selection 1

I used this photo for the front cover because I personal thought it was the best photo out of all of the ones we took, also it was the closet one to what I had pictured in my mind. And it had enough space to write things on top of it so it was perfect for the front cover.

Alex's organisation of actors, props and photo shoot plan

Photo shoot 1
The first photo shoot i did was certianly one of the hardest shoots i did , not because of the sheer amount of props i had to use which was 8 guitars, 4 amps, 2 effects boxes, 1 keyboard, 4 guitar leads and alot of tinsel and christmas decorations these were needed because my magazine is a christmas special. I used 2 actors for this shoot Celine Pohl and Frances Major in the end i used the photo which had France in because it looked more what i wanted it to look like. This shoot was taken in my house in the living and all of the props we brought from my room into the lounge.

Photo shoot 2
The second photo shoot i did was in the recording studio and because my jamie's magazine is based on rock music and the technology side of music i needed some pictures of the mixing desk and instrutments i dont have at home such as drums. For this shoot no actors or props were needed, no actors were needed because i only needed pictures of the equipment and no props were needed because they were already in the recording studio.

Photo shoot 3
The last photo shoot was like the second one because most of the photos were blurred because there was a smudge on the lense so i had to basically take most of them again but from this shoot i came up with better angles, making some of the orignial pictures better then they were. And i also took more variety of shots such as close up and midshots.

Alex's Front Cover

Jamie's Final Front Page

Here is my final picture for my front cover. i think it has worked very well. the banner looks very good with the translucent effect and the final looks very much like my draft did.

Jamie DPS Text

The Mighty Major!

From humble beginnings as a country lad who grew up on the farm, Alex Major has certainly made a name for himself. We managed to catch the star in his recording studio and we found out a lot of things about this amazing young man. We asked the Wonder Boy just what exactly got him hooked on the life of a rock star and how on earth he stayed positive despite no “Big Break” ever coming in sight. We’ve asked about his love life and seeing how his girlfriend has helped keep him on the straight and narrow, and helped keep him focused on practicing to be the best he can be. I think we can all agree that she’s done a pretty good job so far, as he’s managed to take the rock and roll world by storm. The final question we asked, which is probably the one burning in all your hearts to be asked, “Why on earth he calls his guitar Suzie?”

Alex grew up in very rural, very secluded area on a farm. The buildings on the farm are certainly old and rustic, but this proved to be a great help to the youngster, but more on that later. His childhood, still fresh in his mind, was a happy one. He tells us that he loved helping his dad out in the fields, feeding the various animals they kept. These were the usual; sheep, pigs, chickens and the occasional cow. A typical weekend would often end up him waking up early with his dad, and riding out on a tractor together. He’d help in the fields, get very dirty along the way, before coming back in at lunch for a hot bath and oddly enough, pizza. He loved it; he originally thought he’d follow in his fathers’ footsteps. That was until, he heard that song. That one magical melody that converted him.

He told us that when he moved into the attic when his little sister needed a room of her own he found his dad’s old records and some C.D’s. His dad came up and found Alex listening to an old Paul Gilbert album. Namely, “Flying Dog” and the song...“Down to Mexico”. Ever since hearing that song, Alex found himself tapping it away on things like his legs, on the table at dinner and just anywhere he found a surface. At first his parents thought it was cute for about a week. But then it got annoying to them. It was all the time. So, they decided to get him something to play it on. Something “to stop that infernal tapping!” his mother told us in an interview. So, that Christmas they decided to get him a guitar. Nothing special, just a regular guitar and the “Down to Mexico” tab sheet, and 25 lessons with a qualified teacher. “He was ecstatic!” his father told us. He never once put it down that entire day. In fact, he rarely left his room that entire week. Well, obviously he did for school, but as soon as he was home, he was up in that attic strumming, plucking and rocking away. It was clearly something he was born to do...
7 years onwards and he’s living a great life he told us. The same farm, but now, he had a use for all the old buildings. “The acoustics in them were amazing. The sound seemed to echo off of every surface, creating my own little musical barn-shaped bubble. I did love it, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else with my life really. I just wanted to make music.” This wasn’t for some time however. No matter how hard he practised, no matter how skilled he was, it would be for nothing if he didn’t “get noticed”. For a while, he didn’t. Luckily for him, his dad had become pretty good mates with the new owner of his dads’ favourite watering hole.  So, being the amazing father he is, Reuben, got his son a gig there, along with about 8-9 other local acts due to perform there. “ This was it! My chance... but obviously, it wasn’t as simple as that”...

The show went brilliantly; the crowd was shouting “ENCORE! ENCORE! ENCORE!” “I was elated, I felt on top of the world!” but sadly, it was just an evening. There was no phone call for him, no letter or visit from some big-shot producer. Still, he did become somewhat of a local sensation, and it was through this local legend that he met his current girlfriend, the angelically voiced, Celine Pohl.

Institutions Research

The first institution I’m researching is IPC Media. They claim to be the leader of UK engineering, technology, country lifestyle activities. They have currently 42% of men in the UK buying at least one of their magazines and about 2/3 of women populating are buying at least one of their magazines.
The only music magazine they sell, which would compete with ours, is NME. NME appears to be a magazine that doesn’t focus on a specific genre and they also contain other news, such as sports. This could both be a bad and a good point. It’s bad, because it means we’d have to contend with them, but it’s a good point, because it means the company has faith in a magazine that has multiple focuses. This would be ideal in a way, because it means we’d have a chance at getting noticed, because they know themselves how popular a magazine like this can get.

Future PLC.
The next institution is Future PLC. They claim to be “the biggest guitar and music-making publisher in the UK” which would be a great reason to go to them. This is obvious why; they clearly know what they’re talking about when it comes to selling music magazines and editing them.  They produce “Classic Rock” and “Metal Hammer”.  This tells me that they are trying to go for magazines that confer to the “master of one” way of thinking, rather than trying to be “jack of all trades”, so they wouldn’t have much faith in a magazine that is trying to focus on new artist’s and new musical technology devices.
Plus, Future has a technology section of magazines as well, so that makes me think they wouldn’t want a magazine that bridges the gap. They’d probably suggest to us to split the magazine into two separate ones. This would mean we’d still get business, but not through our magazine.

Imagine Publishing
Imagine would only really cater to the technology side of our magazine, so I doubt they would accept our magazine and it would only be to focus on the musical technology side.

Bauer Publishing
Bauer is now the largest consumer magazine publishing company in the UK, playing a primary role in the Women’s Weeklies, Women’s Interest, Women’s Lifestyle, TV Listings, Puzzles, Men’s Lifestyle, Music & Film and Specialist magazine markets.
Bauer is obviously one of, if not the biggest publisher around, so it’s natural we’d donsider them. They have many music magazines in production right now, and our biggest rival among these would be Kerrang! They are probably our magazine’s most trying rival, given how big their fanbase is, and the fact that they cover many types of stories. We would outmatch them on the technology side of our magazine, but they would beat us with the music, just because of their substantial notoriety in the music magazine field, and it’s due to Kerrang!s success that Bauer are unlikely to publish us, because they are already publishing Kerrang!

Selection and Rejection of my Photos Jamie

My first picture I decided to get rid of was one that I took during my photo shoot for my front cover. I’m discarding it, because my model is looking towards the camera along with a slight bit of blurriness. It might not look like much, but blown up, the guitar head is very blurred, to the point it doesn't look like it’s there and there’s an obvious movement of him.

My next photo that I’m rejecting is one of my model inside a small courtyard. The lighting is poor, and he’s too far away from the camera and there’s nothing happening in the foreground to support him being that far back. For example, if we had some fans dancing or something, and him being on a stage, that might warrant this, but as there is nothing but black space, it’s ok for rejection. We were experimenting however, so it’s not that big of a deal. The photo was very clear however, which was a plus...

Another photo I’m rejecting for my front cover is one in which we decided to try and use a different colour of lighting in our photo, so we used a red filter on an outside light to achieve this effect. It looked pretty good, but this particular photograph was taking when I slipped a bit and blurred it. The other photos with this effect came out pretty good, but when I got closer to my model, the light was burning out the texture from the picture around the lighter coloured parts of his outfit.

These were all for my front cover. Except the last one, this was a consideration for my dps.
for my front cover, I’ve decided on this picture because it has my model centered, there's no burn or excessive lighting on him and he's looking off into the middle distance, as if in deep thought...

For my contents page, I’m going to use some equipment shots, or maybe an instrument. I haven’t decided. It’s going to be between one of my shots of the input device used in recording that measures the gain of the inputs, or a mixing desk. I like all three of my pictures, but I prefer no.1 due to it looking very professional, with how the various dials, sliders and knobs face out towards the back of the photo. a great use of depth of field in my opinion and I’ll probably use that one for my contents page.

3.

My dps picture is either probably going to be a combination of two photo’s,  Or something like a collage. i’m going to use an album art style photo, which was created by this picture. Yes, the picture is blurry, but with the adjustments we’ve made, the background has become a painted style background with a tool. It looks pretty cool, because my models’ shadow, is carving a path through the paint style work and his obvious blurriness has been removed.

Jamie's Draft Pages

Here is my draft for my contents page of my music magazine

Here is my DPS draft. the other page to my draft is going to be a culmination of pictures of my model in various poses, with some pulled quotes.

Jamie's organisation of actors, props and photo shoot plan

Photo Shoot No.1

To organise my actors i had to first decide when and where i would be shooting and who i would be. naturally, i had to choose alex, given my article was on him, and he suggested his house. he told me there were multiplte sites that would make for a good shot, and he was right. we got a pretty good shot at night of him sat on a stone pedestal almost looking of into the middle distance. this i would use for my front cover.

we made plans to go to his house on the 16th november. he'd be wearing casual clothes, to make it seem like it as an everyday in his life with him practicing his guitar. In this first shoot we decied to get him to wear a hoodie and to have it up, almost to give him a more "thug-ish nature" and i thought i could use this for my DPS as his first albums' cover art, which i names, merciless affection. and i thought it could be an album that focused on the troubles he's had in life so far, along with the happier times too.

To organize our props, i asked Alex what instruments he had at his house, which was numerous types of guitars. so, i asked him on the night if we could take a few of them. we ended up using the guitar Alex calls "Suzie".

To feed our hungry actors and helpers (Celine Pohl and Frances Major) we both put money towards pizza's for the four of us.

Photo Shoot No.2

We had to cut our last photoshoot short due to it being too dark to take any sort of pictures. plus everyone was shivering and it was lowering our picture quality. we did however get a very nice shot for Alex's first album.

My second photo shoot took place in our recording studio at school. i wanted to grab a few shots of people working the mixing desk, given that our magazine also focuses on the technological side of rock and roll. So, i asked m smart looking friend Anders Lang if he wouldn't mind modeling for me. He didn't. So i managed to get some pretty good ones of him using the mixing desk and pointing at the screen, basically, as if i was a fly on the wall.

The props we needed were already in the recording studio, so i didn't need to bring anything, i just needed to get the right positions for each prop and of course, to get my model into the right poses and positions.

1. 60% of people we asked to fill in are results were male , where as 40% were female. This shows us that we tried to get a balanced set of results so that we can make the magazine unisex , so that we can sell to a wider audience.

2. 80% of are audience was 15-16 and 20% was 22 and over meaning that from this we can make sure that are magazine is based for 16's and over, setting are target market.

3.This bar chart shows the amount of magazines that are bought by are audience and how often they get bought, the majority shows other, and this means from most of the results that they would only buy a music magazine if it had a band they liked on the front cover and had money to spare. this tells us that we need to release our magazine monthly, rather than our initial idea of being bi-quartley, so we can grab our audience when they are going to be looking for a magazine.

4.The majority of our surveyors chose other because we didn't make it clear enough that it was for a music magazines so other were put such as gaming , cars etc. And if we were to do it again we would make this question more clearer and more options.

5.From this question we have found out that the most popular thing is posters , so that we should  try to put in posters in are magazine. Also we shall include a freebie on are magazine as that was the second most important thing from are question , the freebie could possibly be a CD or a keyring etc.

6.Question six helped us by seeing what they expected to find in a magazine and anything that was thought of by us that was not answered by the surveyors should not be considered as important.

7.This question helped a lot as we were stuck on deciding so that question decided the magazine should be called The Rock Room.

8.From question 8 the colour scheme has been chosen for us, we had chosen that white and black would be the main colour scheme we just needed a secondary colour and we could not decide so we left it to the surveyors.

9. 60% of people said that they didn't go to concerts and 40% said they would only go if the band playing was a favourite of theres so to make our magazine be as effective to all of are audience we most include a wide selections of bands in other issues.

10. This question helps us for question 5 , because for the freebie we could a CD but from question 10 we have found out that 50% download music and do not buy CD's so maybe the best freebie would be  voucher for a free album download of a band of there choice.

Jamie's Contents Page

·         Same font as masthead of magazine.

·         3 different size fonts for each page description.

·         Same style throughout each magazine

·         Same order of content in a magazine

·         Large section in the middle is for competitions. Always competitions

·         At the base of each contents page, there’s an editors foot note

·         They have subscribe bonus offers

·         The photo in the centre relates to the competition. It’s humorous, shows the magazine is light-hearted.

·         The colour scheme is the same as the front cover: red, white and black with splashing of yellow.

·         There is the rule of thirds, in that the information of the content of the magazine is on the right hand side of the page and is for every Kerrang magazine.

·         There are no pulled quotes.

·         In the descriptions for the contents there are some puns and using the letter “K” in place for things, which helps show us that the article is theirs.

In this contents page, there is the same colour scheme for the contents page, as the front cover. It is black, white and red with splashings of yellow. The font is the same as on the front cover as well, which fortifies their colour scheme and house style. They use 3 different font sizes for their page name, the description and the page number. As I’ve said, the style is in every Kerrang magazine along with the fact they have a competition every week, and the picture on it is always in relation to the competition. There are no pulled quotes however... they do however have editors’ footnotes at the base of the page which is a way of making the magazine seem a bit more relaxed and homely. Almost as if the editor is speaking directly to the reader. The font used is a sans serif font, which is one of the more modern fonts, which is another way of bringing this magazine into the future.

The picture involves a guy drumming, and he has an “animal” head from the muppets. Animal was famous for drumming, and the competition prize was a really cool drum kit. Basically, they were making a pop culture joke.

Shared Contents Page

The contents page of this magazine has a slightly more complex design layout from my previous contents page , which was a Rocksound magazine and this is a Kerrang magazine. The layout has an advert , a picture and a competition all on the page , also it has a editorial at the bottom of the page talking about one of the main articles. The house style for the contents page has kerrangs colour scheme being yellow, red, black and white , also they have used these colours for the competition as well.

The sub headings on the side are simple to understand and they also will help the reader to get to what he/she wants to look at. The contents headings go news, live reviews, posters, features, albums, gig guide and the ultimate rockstar test if the user wants to go to live reviews and other magazines just had lots and lots of page numbers the user would have to take a couple of minutes to find it , whereas this contents page the user just has to spend a couple of seconds scanning down the side and they will find what they need.

There's also a competition in the middle of the page, which is the usual place for this to go in a kerrang magazine.

Joint Revised Initial Ideas

Initial Ideas for the music magazine

        Masthead Ideas
  • Raindrop Rock
  • The Chord Consumer
  • The Darkest Side
  • The Rock Room
From are survey results we have found out that the majority like the name The Rock Room over The Darkest Side , which means we will use The Rock Room For our masthead.

           Content
  • Concerts: Venues, dates
  • Band: Stories
  • New Gear: Instruments, Amps Etc
  • Tips: Guitar techniques, Drum Patterns etc
The results from what people said on "what do you like in magazines?"  was that they mostly posters second best answer was freebies followed by crosswords and competitions. And we would always have main articles and gig reviews but from a question " what would you expect to find in a music magazine?" we found that the people who filled in are questionnaire expected upcoming gigs, posters, interviews with bands and artists, singles, new bands, festival  reviews, adverts, freebies, band pictures, events and articles. All of these things were given as answers from everyone.

 Colour Scheme
  • We will use black and white but are not sure on the secondary colours
  • Possible: Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Purple
From the survey results we have found out that most people preferred red over orange, blue, green and purple.
       Text
  • Font: Jagged text or a hand writing font
  • Bold
  • Underline
We did not get any results on font styles because we did not put a question about fonts on the survey but if we was to do this again we obviously would but we have decided to go with a spray painted template style text for are masthead and big sub headings.
      Target Audience
  • Gender both
  • Social Groups: Rock appreciation
  • Age 16-21
  • Musicians: Pro's , Wanabee
  • The lifestyle people who go to concerts often
The survey has shown that are magazine will be a unisex magazine , because this will widen are market and also increase are sales. Also are magazine will be 16 to 22 as that was the most frequent answer in are survey. We also found out about people who go to concerts , most of the time people only go to concerts if it is that persons favourite band and its affordable. But above 50% of the people who answered said they did not go to concerts.

Alex's Contents Page Analysis

The contents page for this magazine has a very simple design layout, in every other rock sound magazine the contents page most of the time looks like this meaning that this is the contents house style , a simple black stripe with white text showing the page numbers and what’s on them also the light blue is used because the main picture is the lead singer of papa roach ( Jacoby Shaddix )and he has a light blue shirt on completing the colour scheme. Also the picture is on the right and in most of the contents pages apart from ones where the picture has to be on the left the house style put the picture on the right.

The main picture is about the pull quote “ Hmmm… maybe I am the closet Justin Bieber  fan” and he has pulled that face because Justin Bieber has done a picture just like that , so that Jacoby Shaddix is taking the mic out of Justin through the picture. This picture does have some representations of men or more to rock stars as he has a lot of tattoos and that he is wearing quite a lot of black.

Also the contents page is using a sans serif font because it makes the contents page easier to read/understand and it makes the magazine look more modern from using these fonts because there not using times new roman( Serif fonts ) which make things look more mature and older. And because this is a magazine for a young audience 16 to 25 this can be quite important.
